Sandra asks…

Do you believe myecoseek?

Myecoseek is a site that runs on renewable energy. I’ve asked for certificates but they don’t have any. I’m just wondering this but I use http://biogoogle.net because they have certificates.

The Expert answers:

I wouldn’t trust an agency that is unable to provide certifiable receipts.

James asks…

trade schools/independent college, I’m lost?

I want to be an independent business-woman, but would still like to learn science, math, history, etc. I want to go to a school where the purpose for taking a class is purely to learn the information given (not just to get a good looking grade/certificate)
I have never been to college (I’m a recent high school grad.) But from what I’ve heard from friends and family it doesn’t seem worth my time or money…
I want teachers that share my same mindset. Learning shouldn’t be about how to make money, but rather how to become a better all around educated person.
I would like to learn life skills (cooking, sewing, etc), natural medicine, agriculture, renewable energy, carpentry, engineering and traditional American business.
Any advice on how to search for the right trade school or independent college?

The Expert answers:

Geee, this is tough. The system NOW is nothing but crap – all geared to make the capitalists richer. There’s hardly a school that offers all or that u can take all such subjects. U have to choose one or several. Hopefully u get the right teacher and u will be great. The world needs people like u.
Www.virtuesproject.com will help achieve your ideals

George asks…

What possible reason could anybody ever have for wanting to get a renewable energy training certificate?

What possible reason could anybody ever have for wanting to get a renewable energy training certificate?

The Expert answers:

Cause people are wanting to know more about renewable energy more and more to bring that to a company makes you an asset which means more knowledge and money for you, im wanting it

Donna asks…

What possible reason could anybody ever have for wanting to get a renewable energy training certificate?

What possible reason could anybody ever have for wanting to get a renewable energy training certificate?

The Expert answers:

Marketing. Depending on how recognized that certificate is, it could help a person find a job in that field and increase a person’s knowledge of the field.

Ruth asks…

What possible reason could anybody ever have for wanting to get a renewable energy training certificate?

What possible reason could anybody ever have for wanting to get a renewable energy training certificate?

The Expert answers:

While NABCEP or some other certification will not guarantee a job, it does give an advantage to an applicant. They show that the person has at least some basic knowledge and/or skills. It also shows an interest in the industry prior to the job posting.
If you know that you can get a job without it, good for you.
If you have no interest in the industry then don’t bother.
If you want to work in the industry or know what you enough to talk intelligibly about topics relating to renewable energy then get training.

Lizzie asks…

What possible reason could anybody ever have for wanting to get a renewable energy training certificate?

What possible reason could anybody ever have for wanting to get a renewable energy training certificate?

The Expert answers:

To be a salesman perhaps is all it is really good for.

Most of that training is too short to go into any real depth or address any real issues such as structural integrity, windloading, building code issues, electrical code issues, and applicable state laws. As a standalone seminar, it is only consciousness rasing. If it is not part of an established curriculum in technical colleges, or universities- it has no recognizable value to the people doing the hiring. Who is accediting them? Another 501C3? Or a legit accredition agency like “North Central?”

If it is just another 501C3- save your money.

Laura asks…

Is creating an online store for green energy products a good idea?

I am considering to create something like northern tool, but focused only on green(renewable) energy: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/category_alternative-renewable-energy
As an advantage, I can find solar panels for prices less than $1.8/watt retail which is something given that best retailers these days don’t fall < $2. Solar energy for instances doubles in demand recently every 2 years and in 2009 the government (us) passed some bill to subside households that buy alternative energy products – so you can save additionally about 40% or something. So…in a nutshell, I know there are way too many things to consider, like initial investment, certificates, marketing, but my major concern is if this business will make money in that economy and in a relatively new unknown area to the end customer. 10x!

The Expert answers:

It’s a good idea, especially when you consider that the future is green…

-EDIT – As for your worries, well, nowadays, it is a very choppy market out there. But if you don’t try, then you will never know…

Your Questions About Wind And Solar

Ken asks…

Solar Powered Attic Fan ?

anyone has these install , how did it work out for you? , does it really cool down your house enough to be noticeable during the summer ? Is it worth the price?

The Expert answers:

We got one aound year 2000. It worked great at cooling the house. It cost about $425 at the time. Two years later, I was up on the roof, and found that the fan wasn’t turning. I discovered that the motor was fine, but the amorphous silicon panel had burned out. But yet, the house was staying reasonably cool. My guess is that simply having a large hole near the ridgeline is enough to vent the attic through convection – fan turning or not.

When we got our roof redone last year, I asked for one of those whirlybird-type fans – you know, looks like a turban, turns when the wind blows? Works great. More like $50.

Charles asks…

Do solar powered car ventilation systems actually work?

I’m considering today’s Thing Fling, which is a portable car ventilation fan that is solar powered. I would like to know whether this actually works – does it actually exhaust hot air effectively?

The Expert answers:

They seem to work, as long as there is adequate solar energy to keep the thing running.

I’m not really sure if they’re more effective than just leaving the car’s windows open a bit.

Laura asks…

Is there already an solar-wind powered prototype vehicle made?

Just curious…
I notice many cars made within the last decade. Electric cars, solar-powered cars, remote-controled cars, and much more. But I thought I seen a wind hover-craft or something that uses stored energy to power up the power fans under the craft thus liftes the machine and uses the wind from the bottom to fully power the machine and save some to start up the next time. It has a fan on the back to proceed and in front for a efficent stop. Basically a gas-less evoriment friendly machine and strong against earthquakes.

Have you seen one somewhere?
I think they say that it looks similar like the manta machine featured in the Unreal Tournament series.

The Expert answers:

You can easily have a solar or wind powered car – just buy solar panels, or a windmill, and use them to charge an electric car.
*
An electric car can be had for as little as $5000. For this price you get a conversion – a gas car converted to electric. Cars like this look and handle like normal cars, and do freeway speeds, but have limited driving ranges. I drive a car like this. More info here:
*

http://www.squidoo.com/cheap-electric-car/

*
If you want a new electric car, here’s an exciting one, coming out this year. It will go up to 250 miles on a charge, carries 5 people plus cargo, and can charge in only ten minutes. Info here:
*

http://phoenixmotorcars.com/models/fleet.html

*
The Phoenix will be expensive though. If you don’t need to get on the freeway, you might like the Zap. It’s a very fun vehicle that only costs $10,000.
*

http://zapworld.com/ZAPWorld.aspx?id=188

*
I’ll bet you’ve never heard of any of these cars. Popular culture, with help from the media and various corporate interests, continues to propogate the myth that such cars are impossible. Join me – drive an impossible car!

Lisa asks…

How is energy transformed from light to electricity, to movement in a solar powered fan.?

The Expert answers:

In a crystal, the bonds [between silicon atoms] are made of electrons that are shared between all of the atoms of the crystal. The light gets absorbed, and one of the electrons that’s in one of the bonds gets excited up to a higher energy level and can move around more freely than when it was bound. That electron can then move around the crystal freely, and we can get a current.

Imagine that you have a ledge, like a shelf on the wall, and you take a ball and you throw it up on that ledge. That’s like promoting an electron to a higher energy level, and it can’t fall down. A photon [packet of light energy] comes in, and it bumps up the electron onto the ledge [representing the higher energy level] and it stays there until we can come and collect the energy [by using the electricity].

Michael asks…

How to convert a 120 volt fan to Solar powered?

Can somebody advise if this idea will work, I have a 16″ fan in my greenhouse that runs on 110volt power,I was thinking I would plug this into a 12 volt converter ,plug the converter to a 12 volt car battery, and use a small panel to keep my battery charged

The Expert answers:

Your theory will work if you consider the following. A small solar panel won’t supply enough power to run the fan PLUS charge the battery to a sufficient level to run the fan all night. You’ll also need a deep cycle battery. Automotive batteries are designed for high current, short duration applications like starting a car.

Also consider that it takes the same amount of power (watts) to move a specific volume of air whether the fan is powered by a 12vdc or 120vac Example, a 120vac 1 amp fan motor will have sufficient power to move the same volume of air that a 12vdc 10 amp fan motor can move.

Here’s some design factors you should consider. If your 120 vac fan @ 1 amp runs 24/7, you will use 2,880 watts for that day. Presume you have 6 hrs of daylight that the solar panel is working at peak efficiency. A 120 vac 1 amp fan is not a big mover of air. But if you have a small greenhouse, it may be big enough.

Fan uses 120 watts/hr for 6 hrs during peak efficiency time = 720 watts
Fan uses 120 watts/hr for 18 hrs during non peak efficiency time = 2,160 watts
Your solar system must put 2,160 watts back into the battery during the 6 hours the solar panel is running at peak efficiency = 390 watts/hr PLUS 120 watts/hr to run the fan while the solar system is charging the battery PLUS about an additional 25% for inefficiencies in the inverter. So, your solar panel will probably have to be close to about 700 watts/hr @ 12vdc output.

If your fan motor uses 2 amps, double all of the numbers I’ve given you. I’m sure there are more design considerations than I have covered – I’m not an expert in this field. Prevailing weather conditions in your area (many cloudy days) may require a larger capacity system as solar panels have less power output on cloudy/rainy days.

Steven asks…

Do you think the SOLAR POWERED AUTO COOL FAN can hold up in the desert “Arizona”?

or will it melt in the summer heat like so many other things in the car?

The Expert answers:

It’s not going to do you much good at night. During the summer it can still be well over 100 degrees at midnight in Phoenix.

Donna asks…

Will a normal house thermostat run off a solar panel?

If not, what kind of thermostat should I use? I’d like to assemble a solar powered fan for various projects but the temperature needs to be regulated. I think I can get away with just a 12 volt computer fan and I have found the panel online but without the thermostat i’ll be in hot water. Thanks!

The Expert answers:

A normal house thermostat, doesn’t,t require any type of electricity to operate, it is Simply a mercury switch on a bi metal spring , the bi-metal coil expands and contracts, allowing the mercury to open or close a set of contacts,

William asks…

Is 600$ labor a fair price to install 3 solar powered roof fans on a cape code style home with a steep roof.?

bout this house in the winter and ready to move by the summer, the 2nd floor is unbearable due to the heat. After moving in I notice the house didn’t have any ventilation in the roof. Had roofer come out today and he quoted 600$ if I bout the fans.

The Expert answers:

Bout = a brief fight or conflict
bought = past tense of buy

$600 sounds a little steep to me, but then again you say the roof is steep too. That makes the job more difficult, more dangerous. Considering he has to carry insurance and see that the job is done safely, not to mention be sure it’s done well enough he doesn’t get a call someday saying there’s rain coming in around the fans, $600 might not be too bad.

Read up on the fans. How confident do you feel doing the job yourself? Is $600 too much to assuage your doubts as to whether you can start, finish and be certain the job is done correctly? If it’s too much, it’s too much – but then you’re on the hook for doing it.

Ruth asks…

How are space probes powered when there is no oxygen in space?

I mean rocket fuel shouldnt combust and im guessing they cant use solar powered fans at all. I’d like to know where I can read more about how space probes are propelled.

Thanks

The Expert answers:

They carry their own fuel system and the rest is simple Newtonian physics.

Your Questions About Wind And Solar

Sharon asks…

Why not more Solar Energy and Wind Turbines no destroying the earth, It’s Free?

Plus using solar and wind will also create jobs. Live in an area where they “frack” and the destruction of land, water and air is terrible. Google one of those “frack” ponds and it is scarey what you see! In fact just in one area I can Google three frack ponds one of which is close to a school. Check and see when they do the extraction of the gas it causes “mini” earthquakes how many mini does it take to cause one Large earthquake?

The Expert answers:

If you think wind and solar are free, or even cost competitive, you have not done the most rudimentary homework.

Wind is typically 3x the cost of coal fired power. It is unreliable; when the wind does not blow, you have to have a conventional power plant to back it up. The average output is about 20% of the installed capacity, so you have to build 5x as many wind generators as you supposedly need. When the wind is less than about 30 knots, the wind farm puts out less than full power, so you have to run the backup power station to take up the difference; but then it is operating at part capacity, so its fuel consumption and emissions per KWH generated are higher. Wind farms are low-intensity, meaning that they take up a lot of land for a given power output. One state figured out that to meet the state’s ’20% renewable’ energy mandate with wind power, they would have to cover 1/5 of the arable land in the state with windmills. The neighbors don’t like them and the noise, especially at night. Even with the tiny percentage of the US power consumption we now get from wind (a few percent), the wind farms are killing 440,000 birds a year, and no one knows how many bats. The wind farm at Altamont Pass, CA (east of Oakland) is killing endangered golden eagles at over twice the rate that the population can sustain.

Solar has similar problems, and is even more expensive.

Mandy asks…

Oil is dirt cheap. Will Obama break the budgets of American families with expensive wind energy or will he?

… raise the cost of manufacturing steel and aluminum and other things in the US by forcing carbon taxes onto business, and thus, consumers … sending yet more jobs overseas and raising prices to hurting families?
China is investing in oi exploration in Brazil and Russia. Obama is making us dependent on foreign oil by refusing to explore in the US.

The Expert answers:

Oil is only cheap because we might ween ourselves off of it. If we stop making alternative energy an issue, oil will skyrocket again. How many times do you have to step into the same trap before you learn to walk around.

Sandy asks…

Job aspect of energy (nuclear, wind, solar, etc.)?

i’m doing a project on the job aspect of of energy, in the economy, (wind, solar, nuclear, etc.) How will energy and such plants create jobs for our economy, and how does it affect the job aspect?

The Expert answers:

To put people back to work today and reduce our dependence on foreign oil tomorrow, we are seeking to double our renewable energy production and renovate public buildings to make them more energy efficient. The energy provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, signed into law by President Obama on February 17, will create more than 500,000 jobs, and accelerate deployment of smart grid technology, provide energy efficiency funds for the nation’s schools, offer support for the nation’s governors and mayors to tackle their energy challenges, and establish a new loan guarantee program to keep our transition to renewable energy on track during the economic crisis.

“… this approach is a win-win for a strong economy and a healthier environment. With green investments of close to $100 Billion, this bill will create good jobs for people here in America and reduce our dependence on dirtier energy sources. The Sierra Club praises Congress for promoting the shift to wind and solar power, high energy performance low carbon cars and buildings, mass transit, and a modernized water and transportation infrastructure.” [Sierra Club, 2/11/09]

“..this economic recovery package …will deliver jobs and green infrastructure to America. The bill makes smart investments that will jumpstart the economy, help sustain future growth, and meet the challenges of the 21st century… The recovery package includes bold investments for renewable energy and efficiency… Renewable energy grants will help struggling businesses cope with the economic climate and advance technology that harnesses the power of the wind and sun…The economic recovery package reflects the commitment by Congress to fulfill President Obama’s vision for a clean energy future.”[Natural Resources Defense Council, 2/13/09]

Joseph asks…

solar and wind energy how can I find a job in that industry?

The Expert answers:

Have a look in your local area phone book, or online, for companies that are engaged in that industry. Then apply to them for jobs! You could also ask in your council office/town hall to see if there are using any companies for green initiatives in your town, and make contacts that way.

You will also need some engineering background and experience, to be good at math or physics.

Ruth asks…

Do you have to have a degree to be a wind energy technician?

I’m doing a project that includes a Career in energy, so I chose Windy Energy Technician. Anyone that’s in the field, or anyone that knows-what are the job requirements? Is a degree needed? Thank you

The Expert answers:

That’s a really great career to look at, especially with a high focus being placed on alternative energy nowadays. I think I can help you answer some of your questions:

-Do you have to have a degree to be a wind energy technician?
It really depends on where you go. Some schools may offer degrees while others offer certification programs.

-Is a degree needed
It really depends on where you are applying. But often times with a lot of jobs, experience is key.

-Job Requirements
Wind turbine technician combine their knowledge of mechanics, hydraulics, meteorology, composites, and computer science when servicing and maintaining large, commercial-scale turbines. Essentially, they maintain wind turbines and ensure they are working properly.

People that study wind energy basically learn these things, all of which can tie into their job requirements:
* DC Circuits and AC Circuit Fundamentals
* Computer Fundamentals
* Technical Mathematics
* Hydraulics
* Principles of Wind
* Safety Theory
* Electromechanical/Safety Practicum
* Applied Wind Physics

Here’s a link to a blog article from a school that offers the program going into some fun facts about wind energy and wind technicians http://blog.pcitraining.edu/?p=37

Hope this helps you out, good luck with your project!

Chris asks…

Working two jobs and shattered any tips on keeping my energy up?

i work two jobs and constantly feel tired. I love what i do but my energy is really really low between work and personal life. I usually have 3 hours between jobs and i begin to wind down, making it harder to motivate myself to go back out to work. What do you folks do to try to keep you awake and focused?

The Expert answers:

Been there when I was in my twenties and getting married. Either reduce your hours in the second one or give it up. It was not worth it for me and it is unlikely to be worth it for you in the long term

Donna asks…

What are some decent jobs in the clean tech/energy sector?

Can anyone list a few decent paying jobs in the clean tech or energy (clean energy, not oil or coal) sector? Whether it be smart-grid tech, wind, solar, geothermal, batteries, LED, etc.

Thanks in advanced.

The Expert answers:

The jobs these days would be in Engineering – Planning or Designing technologies.
Installation – They need qualified people to install Solar Panels.
Supply Chain/Planning – Someone to order Products.

The first two are your best bets.

Steven asks…

how can i find a job installing wind turbines & solar energy in florida?

i want to sell them and install them

The Expert answers:

The same way you find a job in any other field: get in touch with potential employers that do business in Florida and apply for a job. You may need some experience in sales or installation to be considered seriously as a candidate for employment. Check your credentials and update them at your local school or training facility (current job?). Good luck.

Nancy asks…

I want to make wind turbines and go into wind energy how?

What major should I major in to do this? Which schools should I look into? Will I have a job in the future?

Lisa asks…

how to leave motley fool for erasing my stocks and shares?

So I had an idea to invest in the future, and I believed in solar power. I found Motley Fool’s website, saying how easy they made share dealing, anyone could do it, as long as you picked good stocks.

So… I went for it. I picked solar power stocks, (gone up since!).

However, MF have been nothing but incompetant. From day 1 they messed me around so much I dont have space to list it all. Motley Fool have:

* neglected to tell me that I can’t use ISAs to invest in US stocks despite me clearly repeatedly telling them before hand I wanted to invest in some US companies.

* forced me to move money OUT of MF back to my bank, and back to MF… just to get it out of the ISA and into the international thing. Incurring extra charges each way.

* Reported a loss when my stocks went up!

* Now all my stocks are ERASED. ALL my stocks do not exist on their system.

This is MY FUTURE. They treat my money like a joke. How do I get my money back? I want to leave them, but keep my shares. I hate them.
By the way… I invested in two stocks. One has gone up more than the other, but I didn’t keep track of how much of each I invested in. So knowing Motley fool, they’ll not take my money seriously or and con me out of more money.

Also, I tried asking about this problem on their forum, but they deleted the post. :( Nice way to treat your customers Motley Fool! Delete their attempts to get help!
Yes you can invest money via motley fool… http://www.fool.co.uk/share-dealing/share-dealing.aspx

but don’t ever use it :( they’ll waste your money like they wasted mine.

In Australia wealthy folks have put solar generators on roof! power prices increased massively! poor vs Rich?

Do you think its fair The Australian Labor Party NB foreignors they spell labour funny as the social justice party?

So why on earth have champions of social justice abandoned the poor where the rich rip off the broke so badly?

Its what I call neuveriche new money? Because julia and Kevin are both extremely wealthy and focussed on economic rationalism? They’ve completely damaged the underclass to abandon traditional working class ideals to care for less fortunates we’ve in fact got 2/3 caucus not caring votes Kevin could win has what appears delluded behaviours? Three fears exist? 1. That they hurt Julia’s feelings coz she’s hypocritical and we really dont know who there leader next week? 2. Fear of failure? They identify with being manipulated by fear and loathing? Spiteful mallice from julia? No? We cant hurt her feelings? 3. I think Therese Rein chatted with Christina Kenneally about what it means to allow new blood in? Again? Kevin as a former Prime Minister must be getting fed up of distrust spite and undermining whilst overseas? Maybe Julian Assange should be employed by kevin the way julia fears international transmission???

All these 3 fears are irrational and cannot accept either Kevin julia or Simon Creen are insanely dysgunctionality? They could be narsarcistic psychopath but I doubt it? Wishful thinking its better than what appears to be?

GIVEN THE ABOVE EXCLUDING DEMEANING PUT DOWNS ASKING FOR CONSTRUCTIVE INPUT IN THE POSITIVE ONLY?

Have Labor become criminally insane because if social justice. Is abandoned eustom generous? Meaning same gene? They’re soft on crime? YOUR COMMENTS? Its the only thing driving Kevin he doesn’t want federal labor no longer a major party like nsw? He’s a hero??????

The Expert answers:

Yep, ever since George Bush privitized the grid in Texas as Governor of Texas, every politician seems to be doing the same. In Texas, the energy costs went from 7 cents a kwh to 25 cents a kwh if you didn’t sign a contract, 13 cents a kwh if you did. However, the state capital where the politicians were did not privatize and stayed at 7 cents a kwh. When Bush became President, he boasted about how he saved Texans money. I don’t know anything about Australian politics but people are people and will buy into this nonsense too.

Note “Labor” is the American spelling and only Americans spell it that way, you may want to look deeper into where their financing is from.

Jenny asks…

Have You Felt Or Experienced Any Effects From The Solar Flares?

The Sun operates on an approximate 11-year cycle (getting more active for about 11 years, then becoming calmer over the next 11 years). It is now in a period of high activity. This activity is resulting in huge solar flares. Earth is primarily protected from solar flares by its magnetosphere but when the magnetic fields of both the earth and the Sun are aligned in a certain way (anti-parallel), radioactive particles do enter the atmosphere and cause damage to electronics, communication, etc. Large solar storms wiped out entire power grids in Quebec in 1989. In 1859, a “perfect” solar storm fried telegraph wires in Europe and the US, causing fires and injury. Studies are now being done on how this affects humans since the human body has magnetic fields as well. Some studies have been studying how the physical effects can trigger emotional effects as well such as depression.

So do you think you’ve felt anything or has your smart phone or internet or cable been acting up? A friend of mine just complained to me last week that she was receiving all sorts of weird calls being directed to her phone – international calls. Last night, a guy who relied on his GPS to get him to where one of our meetings was being held found himself 20 miles off course.

Have you seen the aurora – the northern lights which become brighter and more spectacular when charged by these particles that enter our atmosphere?

The Expert answers:

I’ve gotten some random out of state phone calls and internet strangeness in the last few months, but I’m not going to automatically attribute those things to solar flares. Correlation doesn’t imply causation. I’m not doubting that solar flares can have such affects, I’m just reserving judgement about the causes of individual incidents.

Mary asks…

How does this sound as a possible future timeline?

For those of you familiar with the work of Neil Howe and William Strauss and their book, “The Fourth Turning,” I would like your opinion on my little time line of U.S. events, then world events through the year 2030. Here it is:

The Fourth American Revolution
America’s:
Debt Crisis
Demographic Crisis
Resource Crisis
Imperial Crisis

2010-2015: Commodity prices spiral upward
Economy mired in stagnation/recession
Debt burden rises for households, corporations, governments
Interest rates surge, financial implosion ensues
Economy crashes into major depression
Federal government bankrupt, dollar collapses, hyperinflation takes hold
Economic collapse continues, unemployment skyrockets, incomes plunge
Entitlement programs cut, military downsized, social unrest explodes, protests, riots, etc…
Government clamps down, martial law, authoritarian establishment
Social revolution, political corruption exposed, government officials overthrown

2015-2020: New government officials elected, constitutional amendments ban political/monetary corruption and career politics, new dollar established
Economic bill of rights passed, total overhaul of financial system and corporations
Plans made for rebuilding infrastructure using new technologies
Attempts made to spread responsibility of world policing to other democratic countries
Authoritarian countries, i.e. China, Iran, Russia, North Korea, reject this
Ideological confrontation ensues between “free” countries and dictatorial countries
Global cold war/trade war begins over power and resources, with sanctions, embargoes
International technology race occurs

2020-2025: Cold war turns aggressive/violent, attack threats are made
“Spark” triggers World War III
“Free” countries form allied power, dictatorial countries form axis power
Combination of demographic and technological headwinds compromise axis powers
Allied powers defeat axis powers
Treaties signed, demobilization begins

2025-2030: New world order established, defends freedom and democracy, abolishes war
World constitution created
Globalization completed
Oil replaced with solar power, food/water production revolutionized, medical revolution
Aging crisis solved with new biotechnology/nanotechnology breakthroughs
Global conscious forming through power of the Internet
Economic prosperity returns

The Expert answers:

I don’t think this could happen over the next two decades. The end sounds like an easily possible eventuality, but I don’t think it’s gonna happen this way, especially stemming from today’s events.

Joseph asks…

Is there an easy way out of the “OIL” mess we’ve gotten ourselves into?

Is there an easy way out of the “OIL” mess we’ve gotten ourselves into?

Oil is nearly $100 a barrel. Gas may soon reach $4 a gallon. And Americans are being bitten in almost every way imaginable by this insidious oil hydra.

Two billion people in China and India are now eager consumers. They want the cars, gadgets, and lifestyle that Westerners have claimed as a birthright for a half-century. Their growing energy appetites mean that the international petroleum market may remain tight, even if Americans — who use almost twice as much oil per day as China and India put together — cut back on imported energy.

The Middle East is raking in billions each week. At best, our so-called friends in cash-laden Saudi Arabia subsidize fundamentalist mosques and hate-filled madrassas worldwide. At worst, our enemies in petrol-rich Iran are after the bomb, send weapons into Iraq to kill Americans and fund Hezbollah jihadists.

War in Iraq, rumors of fighting in the near-future in Iran and tension on the West Bank only panic markets raise oil prices and further enrich our grinning enemies.

The nearly half-trillion dollars we will soon pay for imported oil does a lot more than prop up Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The petrodollar drain also contributes to our trade deficits, falling dollar and a general demoralization of the American people.

Our oil habit not only makes us dependent on some creepy suppliers, but we look like fools as we work nonstop to hand over our earnings to those who are rich by an accident of sitting atop oil someone else found and developed.

There is talk in this country of a gradual transition to alternative fuels, solar power, wind machines, plug-in electric cars, and nuclear power. Supposedly Americans will soon be less dependent on imported oil — while helping to slow global warming — as we are weaned off our fossil-fuel addiction.

But let’s talk about the present: If oil continues to climb, ultimately, it will change our very way of life. Hard-pressed families will shell out thousands more a year in direct transportation and heating and cooling costs, and more still as consumer prices inflate.

It may have always been unwise for commuters to buy large SUVs and V8 super cab trucks. Now, though, we may reach the point where these pricey huge vehicles will sputter to a halt. Indebted Americans will still shell out monthly payments to pay off their parked dinosaurs, only to drive them for emergency or ceremonial occasions.

Also expect rising popular anger at an asleep-at-the-wheel government that for the last 20 years should have been doing a lot more to mandate conservation, subsidize alternate fuels, encourage nuclear power and open up oil fields offshore and in Alaska.

Instead, doctrinaire free-market purists and radical environmentalists, hand in glove, for years have thwarted both conservation and exploration.

True, in a perfect world, the market would teach Detroit not to build gas-hungry big cars. Yet in the here and now, we are needlessly burning scarce fuel as too many 7,000-pound mammoths deliver single 180-pound drivers to work — while the auto industry continues on its path to irrelevance.

Meanwhile, green politicians may not want messy oilrigs off their coasts, or tankers up north among the ice and polar bears. But so far very few of them have sworn off jet travel, nice cars or ample homes.

Oil companies claim that they are only passing along escalating costs from overseas suppliers over which they have no control. But around a third of our oil is pumped here at home.

Think about it: The cost to extract oil from existing older wells is relatively fixed. For much of the 1990s and early 2000s, oil prices had been steady at between $20 and $30 a barrel (when adjusted for inflation) — and domestic oil companies did quite well. So now at near $100 a barrel, these corporations are raking additional profits of over $60 a barrel — potentially a domestic windfall of hundreds of billions of dollars each year.

Is there an easy way out of the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into?

Maybe a Silicon Valley genius inventor or entrepreneur will step forward with a breakthrough new energy source.

Maybe our government will start a crash project on the scale of the Manhattan Project to conserve and produce more fuels.

Maybe China and India will consider radical conservation measures.

Maybe countries like Iraq, Libya, and Russia will start reinvesting in their oil infrastructures and double production.

Maybe the Middle East will finally settle down and soothe jittery oil speculators.

Those are too many maybes to wait for while our way of life hangs in the balance. It is past time to demand from our presidential candidates, as well as the current government, exactly when and how they plan to slay this many-headed oil monster.

The Expert answers:

Yeah, I read the op ed by that Victor Davis Hansen guy in the SF chronicle this morning (on the train as I commuted to work b/c gas is so expensive these days).

My answer is: No, there is no easy way out. Unfortunately, our global, national and even local economies runs on oil. We need to find a way to change our current automobile fleet into one that runs on something we can produce here, be that bio fuel, hydrogen, etc. That is way easier said than done though. Most experts agree there is no magic bullet, that is, there will have to be a comprehensive set of fuels which replace oil. Developing an infrastructure which sustains that for the transition between oil to this new set of fuels will be very challenging.

To the guy that said bio diesel, that is part of the solution maybe, but to switch the entire automobile/trucking fleet to a bio diesel standard would require too much crop acreage unless the internal combustion engine were made more thermodynamically efficient or replaced with something new.

Steven asks…

Do you agree with this statement?

An African campaigner and film-maker, Roy Kwesi Andrews toured the UK and was initially “”overjoyed by the ease of life that development has brought to people in the UK”" but grew angry at the way he saw his own country being held back by those in the west who profess to have his continent’s best interests at heart: [quote]

—————————————————–
“” my amazement turned to anger as the gulf between Ghana and London became apparent. I saw huge beautiful bridges and highways, underground trains, railways, buses and modern housing. I was incensed because, in Ghana, tiny, low-scale development projects are all that are on offer from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and various externally-funded NGOs.”"
—————————————————————-

Roy Kwesi Andrews demanded the same level of infrastructure for his country that he saw in the west – large power stations capable of generating reliable electricity 24/7 and 365. Proper roads and bridges to carry food to market. An economy that provides enough wealth to allow people to fly abroad if they want. He said: [quote]

——————————————————————
“”We hate being constantly subdued by nature; we are tired of dying early; we are tired of sleeping in mud huts; we are tired of walking long distances for water, food and fuel; we are tired of doing our washing by hand; we are tired of farming with hoes and cutlasses and waiting for nature to be merciful unto us. You think this way of life is ‘natural’ and happiness-inducing? Then you should try it out.”"
——————————————————————-

So, given that understandable anger, here’s the statement that i would like your opinion on:

———————————————————
“”At another discussion, a concerned student told me that humans are destroying the planet. He said that we are greedy, consume too much, produce too much, fly too much and drive unnecessarily big cars… He said that all of this greedy consumption by Westerners is to blame for Africa’s poverty. I felt very sorry for this doom-monger. Africans are not suffering because of climate change. We’re suffering because of underdevelopment. The fact is we simply don’t have the infrastructure that has enabled the West to subdue nature. If we are at the mercy of the climate, it is because our societies remain under-industrialised.”"
——————————————————

~ Do you agree that it isn’t climate change that is causing Africa to suffer but rather under-development? And do you really believe that wind turbines and solar power are enough to pull an entire continent out of abject poverty? And if so, will you take up the author’s challenge? (see article).

The Expert answers:

Yes – this is an obvious truth. Take a good hard look at Ghana – that is the future for us if we follow the Greenpeace agenda. It is certainly what Dr James Hansen wants for the West – a massive die-back followed by a subsistence economy. No cities, no roads, no motor vehicles, no power stations – Sound familiar? That’s Ghana.

William asks…

Would you vote for me? here is what I believe in!!! Please Read Vote Mr. Jones?

Economy-Taxes should be based on a percentage of what you make, that way it is fair. State sales taxes should not be over 5%. Corporations should not be controlled by the government, but if they pose some kind of danger to the country they should be regulated.

Environment-The government should support Electric cars by offering tax credits to companies that sell them. Also people who buy them should be recieve a tax credit. Solar power should replace the use of oil. Domestic production should continue middle eastern oil should not be used by the U.S. Wind power should be used in off shore wind farms.

Immigration-English should become the national lanuage. Documents including drivers test should all be in english. Illegal immigrants should be prosecuted, they broke the law, and they should be deported. The U.S. should support legal immigration, but due to over population the number of new citizens should be resticted. Companies that employ illegals should be fined and or put out of bussiness. A wall should be constructed along the U.S. mexican border. The U.S. should support workers visa cards for people who want to work here. The U.S. should guide Mexico to help them improve their country, but should not do so with tax payer’s money.

Abortion-should be allowed, look at it this way. Do you want to pay with your taxes for someone’s kid to go through hell living in child care without parents? and what if a girl was raped? This is not an easy answer, and I don’t support the idea of it, but in reality I think it should be allowed, I support abortion. I also support stem cell research.

Gay Marriage-I do not support, but if the majority of a state’s population wants to allow it, then it should be allowed.

Death Penalty-I support, but the evidence has to be there. Your taxes should not go to keeping murdurers and rapists alive.

Crime-More Police and harsher laws. I do not believe in legalizing drugs. Medicinal use should be allowed though. Kids should be educated better in school through programs like d.a.r.e. More colleges should be built in high crime areas like L.A. Oakland, Detriot, to offer people a chance to escape from poverty.

Welfare-I do not believe a large portion of taxes should go to welfare, people need to help themselves. I do believe in food stamps and out of work aid, but not welfare cadallics.

Education-needs national standards and all schools need to have the same criteria in order to graduate high schools and colleges. If a student obtains a GPA above 3.5 their cost to attend any college of their choice (accepted to) should be waved. College should not be out of reach, anyone should be able to attend schools like harvard if they worked hard, despite what their parents make.

Military-Afganistan should be kept under control due to the terror treat. Osama Bin Laden should be captured and prosecuted for his crimes. Diplomacy should always be used before military engagement. The United Nations should should step in on certain issues like the genocide in Darfur. Dipolmacy should be used towards North Korea, but if they go against international law they should be sanctioned.
Gantonomo should not be shut down. They should recieve trials in court though.

Social Security-should not be spent by the government it isn’t their money to spend.

Health Care-should be similar to Canada

The Second Amendment-automatic weapons should be illegal, background checks should be required, Certain guns should not be owned. Should be regulated, but responsible people should be allowed to own a gun.

Afirmative Action-should be abolished, there should be a colorblindness towards everyone. People should be defined by their accomplishments not by their race.

I HAVE JUST PRESENTED SOME ISSUSE AND MY STANCE ON THEM. IF I RAN AS AN INDEPENDENT WOULD YOU VOTE FOR ME. YES OR NO AND WHY. THANK YOU

The Expert answers:

I have to disagree on your stance on abortion. I understand, but being a christian I can not agree. Other than that, I am with you! I must be honest though….I would have a hard time believing you. You sound too good to be true! :-)

Oops….I missed the health care issue…..I don’t believe in socialism an any form. Those people are not getting good health care,.

Another name for climate change?

im creating an editorial cartoon about our environment and climate change and ways people are “going green” etc. does anyone know any catchy names i can use to call them as cities? Like pollution could be called foggy city or something and renewable energy could be called Greenew city…idk? please help me. if you have any puns that would be very creative and helpful. thanks:)

Global Hoax
The debate on Climate Change will never be resolved, in fact we may get cooler instead of warmer.
Gore and others added fuel to the media…
That is why we hear a lot about it, but I don’t believe in Global Warming or Climate Change, I mean yes the climate changes, but not like the media exaggerates it out to be.

Sandra asks…

I’m not a conspiracy nut but I’m starting to think this “recession” was manufactured?

Here is my reasoning. Before the recession (2007) solar power industries were on the rise in the united states. The green movement/initiative was everywhere even china. Then the recession hits and the screwed up thing about is that the ones who caused it (the banks) not only were they bailed out but have been bigger and bigger profits. How many times on any news channel have you heard this line, “Companies are sitting on trillions of dollars because of uncertainty” so to make the businesses more “certain” the tax cuts get extended and ask for even more with promise of creating jobs later. I call bull$hit on that one. I believe in the efficacy of free enterprise and taxes can be stifling but this is pure greed. Oh and it gets better.

Read this article: http://money.cnn.com/2011/09/07/news/economy/oil_jobs/index.htm?iid=Lead&hpt=hp_t1

Remember that pre-recession green movement was the rage. People were excited about renewable energy. Every politician was saying how america should be less dependent on foreign oil and some were even saying that oil should be taxed. The R hits and flash forward to today. Just last week a company that produces solar panels shut down because the costs were too high and barrels of oil too cheap. No politician today would say that oil should be taxed and are now saying that there should be more deregulation and less taxes on oil companies. So the banks profited and the oil companies don’t get kicked out the door. The good news is that it probably means that the conspirators have an end game in mind so we don’t have to worry about a whole economic collapse and companies will start hiring again.

The Expert answers:

That is a very good answer to the recession. Although, i still think that the reason the recession happened is because america spent too much money and never payed it’s debt to other countries causing a double whammy. At the same time, the elite might have seen this and not done anything about it because they realized that they were losing money and with the recession they would be able to buy up properties at reduced prices and thus making themselves richer

James asks…

John McCain questions?

1.what does he think about the us dependence of foreign oil?
2.what does he believe the impact of climate change?
3what does he think the U.S. should spend to promote clean energy or green energy?
4.what does he propose about the use of fossil fuels for the fuels for the future(coal, oil, gas)?
5.What does he feel about renewable resources?what type we should invest in how much money should be invested.
6.What goals the nation sets fir itself in terms of dependence on non-renewable resources?

On the whole…

Helen asks…

Have you asked your local Republican Candidate why he is sending your job to a foreign country?

Whopper, Indeed: Republicans More Responsible for Green Outsourcing

As part of our “Whoppers of the 2010 Election Cycle” article, we noted how Republicans ran misleading ads accusing their Democratic opponents of creating jobs in China by supporting the stimulus package. Not only did these ads completely twist the facts, but it was disingenuous for Republicans candidates to accuse Democrats of sending jobs to China when GOP members opposed the “Buy American” provisions that would have prevented this offshoring. Here, we discuss how the GOP’s sustained opposition to meaningful climate and energy legislation played a larger role in sending green jobs overseas than a vote for the stimulus.

The ads in question twisted facts from an investigative report that had discovered some stimulus reimbursement funds for renewable energy projects, like wind farms, had gone to foreign-owned companies domestically and abroad, largely because there are few wind turbine manufacturers in America. The latest figures suggest only 0.00037% of the total $700 billion stimulus package, $2.6 million, may have made its way to China; however, the ads claimed that “China gets $2 billion to build windmills,” or that the package “sent nearly $2 billion overseas to create jobs in China.”

Even though the numbers cited were incorrect (the majority of foreign-owned wind developers were European), America’s weak clean energy market makes it inevitable that development funds will make their way to foreign-owned businesses — wind turbine purchases are half of the initial wind farm development costs, and the U.S. has only two homegrown wind turbine manufacturers, General Electric and Clipper Wind. What’s more, both manufacturers still import many parts from overseas factories, and their market share has been consistently slipping, thanks to increasingly vibrant wind industries in Europe and Asia.

The Expert answers:

They both have failed us. Now Obama is putting the finishing touches to a once great nation.
By design . Thanks Mr Clower, Ms. Pivens and Sal Alinsky- you taught him well.

Sharon asks…

What is your belief in global warming and how environmentally friendly is your area?

The area I live in prides itself on it’s renewable energy resources and it’s almost oneness with nature. One of our main exports and one thing our economy hinges around is logging and timbre. 80% of our overall energy comes from renewable resources with the rest coming from natural gas plants. Our renewable resources will only increase as more renewable energy plants, such as two massive wind farms that provide 700MW of total energy, are currently in the process of being built. Our green loving ways have lead to the birth of such activists as David Suzuki and we have shown the world our drive to be environmentally friendly with the greenest Olympic village ever and the, sometimes overzealous, drive to be the greenest games ever. I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Please explain where you live, what your personal opinion is on going green, your belief in global warming and describe the society in which you live pertaining to the environment.

The Expert answers:

Boulder is an incredibly environmentally-friendly town, and CO in general. Masses of outdoor sports, on the cutting-edge of green technology/implementation, great public transportation system and very biker-friendly. CU was even recently voted the greenest college by the Sierra Club. We also have some heavy hitters in climate science in town and on campus: NOAA, NCAR, LASP, and CIRES to name a few.

Personally, I endorse the consensus view on climate change and fully support going green.

Mary asks…

Goodness gracious …who’s got gas? Can Gods little green earth be Self sufficient ?

Each time you perch on the toilet, you may soon take heart that you’re not the only one who’s a bit lighter – you’re taking a burden off the environment as well. Approximately 200 homeowners in an English town called Didcot are among the first in the UK to benefit from gas made from their own waste and supplied through the national grid to heat their houses. The future plan is to make this process available throughout the UK.

So why all the fuss to find new sources of energy? Well, the UK has a goal for 2020 to have 15 percent of the energy it produces come from renewable sources. Producing gas in this way is a strong step toward that goal. Oh, and if you’re worried your house will be smelly, fear not! The gas is odorless and your house will remain toasty.

The Expert answers:

Heck, let’s put up a big bubble over the Amazon rain forest. Termite flatulence used to be the number one source of methane gas in the whole world. If we could collect it all, wouldn’t that be great?

Betty asks…

Should every commercial fryer in the country be mapped and plans drawn up to collect all the used cooking oil?

The fuel it would be used to create could power the trucks used to collect it as well as provide a new relatively large source of renewable domestic fuel.
Is making this happen a good way to tap into a currently wasted resource, create green collar jobs from collecting it and building refineries and fuelling stations across the country? Are there any better ideas to start to fully utilize this currently wasted renewable resource more quickly? Wouldn’t this be a good part of any energy independence plan?

The Expert answers:

The used cooking oil doesn’t work very good in cold weather. Plus companies like Darling International picks up used oil to make into stuff with the rendering byproducts. I think its where stuff like soap comes from.

Mandy asks…

The Green Movement: Should we even bother?

How do you view the Earth from your own point of view: Is the Earth ‘it’ and we should be frantically trying to save it with renewable and sustainable energies/practices/technologies? Or is the Earth like a womb planet birthing us into the rest of space as we launch off leaving behind this planet thoroughly used up and trashed? Or are we going through some sort of global rite of passage and we need to achieve a new sort of equilibrium/balance/organizational system before even thinking about exploring space (or our species might be seen as a kind of parasite/virus/cancer of the universe)? … Or do you prefer George Carlin’s take on it all in that the Earth can handle itself perfectly fine and if it should perceive us as a threat, in an act of homeostatic defense, it will just wipe our species out with a hurricane/flood/volcano/cancer/AIDS/(insert apocalyptic vision here)/so on and so forth. Other perspectives deviating from the above aforementioned few are not only welcomed but encouraged.

“What would you rather be, a virus to the Earth or a blessing?” – Earth’s Essence by CunninLynguists feat Mr. SOS

The Expert answers:

The earth is a living breathing evolving thing. We are just one of many residents on it. The idea that we will find a new world to pillage when we have used this one up is pure fantasy. Our technology isn’t progressing anywhere fast enough to even consider getting out of our solar system, and even if we find that Mars once had water, it doesn’t currently have what we need to survive, so we would have to take all our resources from earth to colonize it.

We seem to think we aren’t part of an ecosystem, but we are. When any single population within an ecosystem expands it’s population beyond it’s food supply or other resources, which is already happening, then they starve and start to die off.

I’ve had many discussions with religious friends and families about how we as humans can’t destroy what God has created. The current environmental movement doesn’t believe humans are destroying the planet, just creating an environment that won’t support the current human population. We frequently destroy what God has created, we have been responsible for the extinction of many species.

I am a selfish environmentalist. I have children and I want them to survive and have as many resources available as possible. I see a future where there are 2 main groups who have a good quality of life, the super rich who can seize resources from weaker poorer groups and those who know how to live off the land and can grow and harvest the necessary resources. Those without money or knowledge will have no way to get food or barter for other items.

Mary asks…

Do you think Bush put corporation and special interest group over average American (the people)?

Just look this year what bush support in bill, he only support war bill, bill that protect cellphone company from been suit in exchange from tapping you and me conversation, request for more oil drilling same time bad solar power and other renewable energy project, don’t wanted to do anything to further regulate the Oil Company. Delay Medicare coverage, reject tax increase for the wealthy, reject increase the length of time UI benefit for the unemployment, reject increase GI bill for our servicement, but approve all the bill related to the Iraq War.

Is Bush blind? should he has visit to typical American to see why turn life is alike this day?

The Expert answers:

Well put. Remember that time he used taxpayer funds to secure an 8 billion dollar stockpile of Tamiflu to fight the bird flu? Well it turns out there’s no human-to-human transmission of that virus, and even if there were, H5N1 (the bird flu) is already resistant to tamiflu. Fortunately, it’s made by Donald Rumsfelds company, so something good came out of it. Sure, the country is stuck with $8,000,000,000.00 worth of snake oil, but at least President Bush’s friend made a lot of money.

Daniel asks…

What D&D alignment represents my views on the environment?

The environment:
• It is absolutely criminal to waste natural resources and burn anything without reason or thought about hidden consequences. We need to move on to clean and renewable energy, regardless of the profit structure of capitalistic demands.
• It is criminal that governments are not allowing scientific progress to take charge of environmental action. Scientists should take charge of environmental action.
• We need to do better at taking care of the environment whatever it costs us. This would include protecting rare species of animal, plant and all other forms of life in order to protect the balance of the ecosystems, and in turn the balance of the earth.
• There must be some environmental considerations to be made before making a decision.
• It’s not just the people that need to take action in regards to the environment; this is after all a cooperative effort. Therefore, the government needs to take considerable action to solve the environmental problems, regardless of the affects it has on the economy.
• Corporations can’t be trusted to take beneficial action on the environment, so they need a degree of regulation.

George asks…

I have a vehicle concept that I want to develop with a major corporation. What do I do?

I have spent the last 7 years developing a vehicle that runs solely on alternative and/ or renewable energy resources. I want to put it into development, but I hardly have the funds to even begin such a project, so I want to reach out for help from a large corp, but have no idea how to start. Most of the big names in motor companies are inaccessible via email, and I definitely can’t get them on the phone. This idea is worth an untold fortune, and I NEED TO UTILIZE IT!! PLEASE HELP!!!

The Expert answers:

First you insure the integrity of your work by getting a patent otherwise you will not be the one getting the “untold fortune”, or even any reasonable portion of it.

Then you get some media attention. You make your own video and send it out to the news stations.

Then you wait until a corporation contacts YOU.

Or… You use snail mail and contact the “Research and Development Department” of major corporations and hope they toss you a bone if they decide you have something worth investing in.

Sharon asks…

Do you think Obama really represents the American people?

“Sen. Obama might say he doesn’t take contributions from oil companies, but he took more money last month from oil company executives than any other candidate. He might say he’ll stand up to the oil companies but he’s the only candidate who voted for the Bush-Cheney energy bill that was written by energy lobbyists and has been called the best energy bill corporations could buy.

“With gas prices this high, talk is cheap. The American people need solutions.”
—Campaign Spokesman Phil Singer

Sen. Obama raised more money from oil executives and employees in March than any other candidate.

Sen. Obama accepted more money from oil company executives last month than any other candidate, while he ran an ad saying he didn’t take money from oil companies. “Sen. Barack Obama continued accepting donations from oil company executives and employees last month even as he aired ads in which he stated he took no oil company money, his campaign finance reports show. Obama has taken at least $263,000 from oil company executives, family members and employees since entering the presidential race last year, including $46,000 last month. At least $140,000 has come in chunks of between $1,000 and $2,300, the maximum permitted under federal law.” [LA Times, 4/24/08]

Bush’s 2005 energy bill was written by the energy lobby, who spent millions to ensure passage.

Public Citizen: Energy lobby gained ‘exclusive, private access to lawmakers’ to advocate for 2005 Energy Bill ‘starting with vice-president Dick Cheney’s energy task force’: “On August 8, 2005, President Bush signed into the law the energy bill; on July 28, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 275 to 156 to approve the energy bill; and on July 29, the U.S. Senate voted 74 to 26 to approve the energy bill. Since 2001, energy corporations have showered federal politicians with $115 million in campaign contributions—with three-quarters of that amount going to Republicans. This cash helped secure energy companies and their lobbyists exclusive, private access to lawmakers, starting with Vice-President Dick Cheney’s Energy Task Force, whose report provided the foundation of the energy bill passed by Congress and signed by President Bush on August 8.” [Public Citizen, "The Best Energy Bill Corporations Could Buy," citizen.org]

With 2005 energy bill, energy lobby got what they paid for.

Washington Post: 2005 Energy Bill was ‘a piñata of perks for energy industries’: The Washington Post said, “…The energy bill, touted as a way to reduce dependence on foreign oil or moderate gasoline prices, has been turned into a piñata of perks for energy industries.” [Washington Post, 7/30/05]
Energy Bill gave $6 billion in subsidies to oil & gas industry: [Public Citizen, "The Best Energy Bill Corporations Could Buy," citizen.org]

Sen. Obama has acknowledged pernicious influence of lobbyists on energy policy he supported.

Obama: ‘You can look at how Dick Cheney did his energy policy…he met with oil and gas companies forty times, and that’s how they put together our energy policy’: “The one thing I have to remind folks, though, of – we’ve been talking about this through Republican administrations and Democratic administrations for decades. And the reason it doesn’t change – you can take a look at how Dick Cheney did his energy policy. He met with environmental groups one, he met with renewable energy folks once, and then he met with oil and gas companies forty times, and that’s how they put together our energy policy. We’ve got to put the national interest ahead of the special interest, and that’s what I’ll do when I’m President of the United States.” [Democratic Presidential Debate, 7/23/07]

For thos of you who think my postings are racist; What would you say if I told you I’m quoting a BLACK author?

Back on Uncle Sam’s plantation
This is one of the very best commentaries on the present situation that I have seen! If a white person had written it they would have been labeled a racist, but since STAR PARKER IS BLACK and admittedly a product of the “welfare state,” it is acknowledged as a person speaking from experience.
Star Parker – Syndicated Columnist

Six years ago I wrote a book called Uncle Sam’s Plantation . I wrote the book to tell my own story of what I saw living inside the welfare state and my own transformation out of it.
I said in that book that indeed there are two Americas — a poor America on socialism and a wealthy America on capitalism.
I talked about government programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training (JOBS), Emergency Assistance to Needy Families with Children (EANF), Section 8 Housing, and Food Stamps.
A vast sea of perhaps well-intentioned government programs, all initially set into motion in the 1960s by Democrats, that were going to lift the nation’s poor out of poverty.
A benevolent Uncle Sam welcomed mostly poor black Americans onto the government plantation. Those who accepted the invitation switched mindsets from “How do I take care of myself?” to “What do I have to do to stay on the plantation?”
Instead of solving economic problems, government welfare socialism created monstrous moral and spiritual problems — the kind of problems that are inevitable when individuals turn responsibility for their lives over to others.
The legacy of American socialism is our blighted inner cities, dysfunctional inner city schools, and broken black families.
Through God’s grace, I found my way out. It was then that I understood what freedom meant and how great this country is.
I had the privilege of working on welfare reform in 1996 which was passed by a Republican controlled Congress.
I thought we were on the road to moving socialism out of our poor black communities and replacing it with wealth-producing American capitalism.
But, incredibly, we are now going in the opposite direction.
Instead of poor America on socialism becoming more like rich American on capitalism, rich America on capitalism is becoming like poor America on socialism.
Uncle Sam has welcomed our banks onto the plantation and they have said, “Thank you, Suh.”
Now, instead of thinking about what creative things need to be done to serve customers, they are thinking about what they have to tell Massah in order to get their cash.
There is some kind of irony that this is all happening under our first black president on the 200th anniversary of the birthday of Abraham Lincoln.
Worse, socialism seems to be the element of our new young president. And maybe even more troubling, our corporate executives seem happy to move onto the plantation.
In an op-Ed on the opinion page of the Washington Post, Mr. Obama is clear that the goal of his trillion dollar spending plan is much more than short term economic stimulus.
“This plan is more than a prescription for short-term spending — it’s a strategy for America ‘s long-term growth and opportunity in areas such as renewable energy, healthcare, and education.”
Perhaps more incredibly, Obama seems to think that government taking over an economy is a new idea. Or that massive growth in government can take place “with unprecedented transparency and accountability.”
Yes, sir, we heard it from Jimmy Carter when he created the Department of Energy, the Synfuels Corporation, and the Department of Education.
Or how about the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 — The War on Poverty — which President Johnson said “…does not merely expand old programs or improve what is already being done. It charts a new course. It strikes at the causes, not just the consequences of poverty.”
Trillions of dollars later, black poverty is the same. But black families are not, with triple the incidence of single-parent homes and out-of-wedlock births.
It’s not complicated. Americans can accept Barack Obama’s invitation to move onto the plantation. Or they can choose personal responsibility and freedom.
Does anyone really need to think about what the choice should be?
“The trouble with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.”

The Expert answers:

Your author, my friend, should be running the Republican party ! Obama is who he is, and will not change. What we need however, is people like Parker who have figured it out and know which direction we need to go.

Parker has properly addressed the political, cultural, racial, moral, and economic issues that confront us today. We need a road map for our post Obama journey back to an America in need of rebuilding. For that, we need an architect with the plan, the layout, the schedule, and the means. By understanding the journey out, it’s fairly easy to see the wrong turns, and this is where wisdom and guidence needs to be placed in the proper hands, for the journey back.

Lizzie asks…

Do drill baby drill people still support corporations having no regulations practically and continued offshore?

drilling?

Or have you woken up and realised a fast transition to renewable cleaner energy is needed? Not only to protect our environment but to protect the many jobs that get adversely affected when disasters like this happen?

The Expert answers:

If you actually took what these conservatives say seriously you’d drive yourself nuts. They have no realistic suggestions regarding drilling for oil, regulations, energy sources in the future or anything else that I can determine.

They are already yelling about why the federal government hasn’t done more about this oil spill, which contradicts their advocacy of smaller government and government nonintervention. Soon they’ll be yelling for federal aid to offset the adverse effects of this oil spill. Their complaints are so contradictory that I am surprised that they can utter them with a straight face.

It is obvious that we need a transition to alternative energy sources and we need it very soon. The pressure should be put on the federal government to devote sufficient resources to get this done.

Your Questions About Wind And Solar

May 1, 2012 by
Filed under Wind And Solar Q & A

Betty asks…

Name the companies and states which harness wind energy in India.?

The Expert answers:

Www.suzlon.com. State governments are yet to do this. Try looking at www.delhiforwater.com too.

William asks…

What’s the reason to subsidize alternative energy companies?

I’m not asking about raw research that occurs at universities – like discovering totally new technologies.

I’m wondering if there are any good reasons to subsidize existing solar, nuclear, wind, etc power companies. By reducing the price of nuclear power below the market equilibrium, people consume more nuclear power than they otherwise would, so there’s a deadweight loss.

If you just want to discourage gas consumption, wouldn’t a gas/petroleum tax be more efficient? That way private firms can optimally choose between other options.

The Expert answers:

Your question is essentially one that should be taken up as a question of economics and not the nuts and bolts of “alternate fuel vehicles.”

There are several reasons. One already mentioned is that most energy companies already get subsidies. But these are larger than the obvious grants and discounts, (credits on taxes.) In economics there is a concept of “externalities.” 1 Polution is cited as a prime example of an externality. It is part of the manufacturing/refining process but the cost of polution is not figured into the end product. (health issues, the costs of clean ups and filtration.) When I go out and buy an air filter I am to some extent paying for someone’s polution. The water treatment plant is a cost that taxpayers bear for polution that has been done upstream.

To the extent that some alternative energy options do not produce externalities they are being asked to compete against an unfair advantage. Subsidies attempt to level the playing field.

There is another aspect as well. To the extent that alternative energy development is a social benefit it may be something that we should socially promote ie: subsidies.

Last, any new company will have difficulties competing with an existing company where economies of scale, and product identification 2 are already in place.

Sometimes it is difficult to put a number on some of these costs/benefits. The alternative may be to start taxing companies for the polution that they produce and eliminating any subsidies that they currently get. Undoubtedly someone would complain when an existing benefit is taken away. Business as usual is hard to change.

George asks…

Couldn’t the same 4 billion dollar tax breaks the oil companies get be used for wind and solar energy instead?

…instead of using fossil fuels to generate electricity?

..for plug-in hybrid cars?

The Expert answers:

We have invested 100′s of Billions in those programs already, and they are still 10 years away from being viable.

Robert asks…

What companies stand to benefit from greener energy and technology?

Given the incoming Obama administration’s emphasis on greener energy solutions, what companies out there are best positioned to gain from this shift? What American companies are currently leading the way in cleaner energy (solar, wind, ethanol, etc)?

The Expert answers:

All companies, not just energy producers, not just auto producers. Think of it this way: Anytime a company can operate more efficiently, and generate less waste in the process, it will prevent harm to the environment, will use less energy, and will benefit from reduced waste management costs.

Laura asks…

Why do racist conservative bigots love funding the military but hate funding green solar energy companies?

The proper role of government as said in the constitution is to fund solar, wind and hydro companies.

NOT to fund a giant a racist military.

The Expert answers:

Because green solar energy companies are a failure. If solar energy worked then people would have move towards that in the 80′s when it was introduced.

Michael asks…

Western Wind Energy Corp.?

Canadian wind energy company

The Expert answers:

You need to provide us more detail – what would you like to know about Western Wind Energy Corp?

It is listed on the Toronto Venture Exchange as WND and has recently listed on the OTCBB as WNDEF.

Lots of news available on the web site below.

Chris asks…

Need list of alternative energy companies for investments?

I am looking for alternative energy companies for future investments; hydrogen fuel cells, battery, solar, wind, etc.

The Expert answers:

A list won´t help you a lot…

You mentioned hydrogen fuel cells… That is still very far away from real competitive applications.

I think you do not only need a list but experts to advise you in which concepts to invest.

Most companies are listed in London at the AIM (alternative Investment Market)

Nancy asks…

How much potential does starting a energy supply company using wind power have?

I’m currently majoring in aerospace engineering at Iowa State and my plans for after graduation are to start up a company in MN and ND. Both of these states are rich in wind energy and have more than enough to go around. Going green is what the government seems to care about these days. With CO2 levels rising, and coal and oil running out- the infinite/renewable resource of wind seems like the way to go…

Q1) is this even a good idea?
Q2) how would i go about starting this up? what would i need?
Q3) Does this have the potential of being a great success?
-thanks

The Expert answers:

The costs of building a wind energy production facility are prohibitive. Without the 100 percent government subsidies currently being used, nobody in their right mind would make any such proposal. One should plan for these government handouts to disappear at some point.

Also, there are huge problems remaining with management of wind-generated electricity, primarily the unpredictable nature of wind fluctuations, relatively poor efficiency (production below 20 percent of turbine ratings), and inability to store energy for even a few seconds. This results in a net loss of “green”, when you consider the fact that you would still need to have the same number of fossil-fueled or other power stations online, running at nearly full capacity, in order to supply continuous electricity when the wind dies for a few minutes. So, not only have wind-energy generators been a colossal burden upon taxpayers and damaged many wilderness viewsheds permanently, they do not live up to any of their promises of “green” energy.

Recent news reports indicate that some so-called “wind farms” (they don’t actually “grow” anything) in the Bonneville Grid (Pacific NW) have been asked to curtail what little production they have, because there is already a surplus of electrical power from other generators. Some systems in Europe have proven to be so inefficient and expensive to maintain that they are being shut down completely, if not dismantled.

The future is certainly not bright for those involved in trying to implement massive wind-based systems without a major breakthrough in technology. For instance, rather than gigantic vertical rotors, some research shows promise in smaller, horizontal systems that are easier to maintain, but still cost-prohibitive and still subject to the zero efficiency when there is no wind and over-production without storage.

Lizzie asks…

Should energy companies be subsidized by our federal government?

Should energy companies be subsidized by our federal government?
If so, which industries should receive them and why? Create a priority list, with industry receiving largest amounts at the top (solar, oil, wind, coal, hydro, natural gas, nuclear).

The Expert answers:

They should offer incentives to the industries instead…make them perform before you pay them.

If you’ve ever paid anyone to do work for you up front you know what it yields…delays, excuses, inefficiency…

Do the work — then get paid.

Your Questions About Wind And Solar

May 1, 2012 by
Filed under Wind And Solar Q & A

Mark asks…

Does anybody know anyone who has a wind turbine?

I looked into solar panels a little and decided they are impractical. I am a renter and i want a portable unit. I’ll honestly probably never buy them, but i’m really curious about finding practical, affordable solutions for individuals looking for renewable energy sources.
Amazon.com has a wind turbine with generator for $600 that generates 400+ watts of energy. A space heater requires ~1500 and would provide a significant amount of heat for a small home, so it would require maybe three turbines. It might be worth it. . .
The solar panels were $300 to produce 60 watts, by the way
again, this is just a curiosity.
Thanks!!

The Expert answers:

My neighbor has a wind generator on a 100′ tower.
Always windy, even at NIGHT.
Works on flat or peaked roof too.
Now he is puttin’ up a second unit.
Must work.

Carol asks…

Small everyday objects that represent science?

As the question states quite clearly, I am look for objects that represent very basic science concepts. These objects really need to be anything that you can find in the average home. The specific ideas that I am working with are as followed (Not all of them are completely science-focused):

Chemical Changes
States of Matter
Mechanical Energy
Gravity
Sound Waves
Renewable Energy (Sources)
Speed
Independent & Dependent Variables
Matter

What I was wanting to do with these objects were to glue/tape them to the side of a dodecahedron, with a small written explanation of the topic. So, they need to be small, but almost anything will work.

Thanks in advance.
I am going to have to share this in class, so I am trying to think of things that could be demonstrated in a way, things being sort of abstract or creative would help a lot with this.

The Expert answers:

Chemical changes- anything that burns, like paper, because burning is a chemical change
States of matter- an ice cube, although I’m not sure how you’ll glue that on your dodecahedron…
Mechanical energy- a toy car
Gravity- something small but heavy for its size
Sound waves- ear buds
Renewable Energy- any kind of wood because wood is biomass, which is a renewable resource.
Speed- paper airplane
Independent/Dependent variables- a watch for independent and something that changes for dependent
Matter- playdough or clay

Hope I helped!

Susan asks…

How Should I Charge My Batteries?

I am planning on making a Home Made Solar Panel and I would like to know everything there is to know before I go and buy parts.

I am asking about the batteries here…
I would like NOT to use the big bulky batteries made for Renewable Energy Sources and other things like that so I was thinking about using NiMH batteries instead.
I would like to know if there is a specific recharge rate (volts & amps) for these types of batteries and if so what would it be aproximatively.

Please help me choose my batteries carefully and if the big bulky ones are really necessary (I don’t like them because they’re lead) could you guide me to some good cheap ones.

I am mostly doing this for the experience and I’m not trying to power my whole house just a room, maybe 2…
Thank you very much for any advice :)
I would like to buy AA 1.2 volt batteries off eBay but I’m not quite sure what brand they’ll be…

The Expert answers:

Make your first purchase a book on how the panels work and what they are designed to do. Most of the information you need is them. Also battery technology is changing very fast. You might want to research the Li ion type rather than AA alkaline or Ni mH.

Richard asks…

Alternative power for homes in Northern Nevada.?

I live in Northern Nevada and was wondering what are some good renewable energy sources that are affordable? I could care less about “global warming”, I would just do it to save money.

The Expert answers:

Solar hot water systems are the only real economic and echo friendly way to use nature domestically at present. Try Insulating your home, roof and walls to.

Good oh but realistically we humans are a very stubborn cattles that even with good advice and well intentioned effort directed at informing them with the truth they just won’t listen to reason and thereby bring grief upon themselves through their own folly and egotism.
You can lead the donkey to the water but you cannot force it to drink it.
But seriously if we are to solve this crisis of epic proportion not only must we shatter the ignorance and division surrounding this debate over global warming but come to the stark realization that the only way to solve this problem is through reducing our world population.
By instituting a worldwide birth reduction plan and birthrate check we can reduce our population to a more sustainable level in the intervening generations.
It’ll take maybe a couple of hundred years to fully appreciate the effect but it must be done.
As for 2012 Mayan calendar end of the world nonsense the world will not come to an end but we will face shutdown of the internet, more earthquakes, mega tsunamis, cyclones, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, shutdown of our electrical supply, food and water shortages, mass riots and looting, mass refugee crisis, Islamic uprising in France and the UK, firestorms which will engulf many states in US and other countries, flash floods, snow storms, a new pope named Peter the Roman or Petrus Romanus, La Palma earthquake which will cause a mega tsunami killing millions of people in the east coast of US and countless other climate related problems.

Ken asks…

Aluminum can solar energy?

I have found a lot of information on using aluminum cans for solar heating…but I am looking for any information on using aluminum cans as a medium for solar panels and how this can be used to create electricity for the charging of a storage system (common storage systems which use marine batteries) in order to provide electrical energy to a house. Any and all plans, blueprints, thoughts, ideas, etc are welcome. I’m looking to go off-grid (does not have to be with this system, but I hope not to spend so much money as is required to solar panels in order to do this), something that can be done without looking to a major manufacturer if at all possible.

I’m also open to ideas involving a combination of systems. An example might be using the heat trapped in the attic of your home which spins the attic vents on the roof in order to spin or turn a set of turbine blades used to charge a set of batteries, in turn providing a renewable power source for your home.

If anyone has any thoughts, ideas or information on anything such as this which is real, please let me know. Thank you.

The Expert answers:

The cans are a poor shape for applying PV technology. If you cut them in half it might be a different situation, but carefully cut one of your cans in half- labor intensive. Now just how much strength does it have? Not much. It will not hold up to the conditions flat panels are made to endure.

Not to mention that in order to get get good adhesion to aluminum, there are a number of steps involved, and it is time consuming and not cheap either. That is even before you try to apply something to them. Then is the matter of electrolytic corrosion. Aluminum is rather reactive to other metals when you get them wet, and this action is accelerated by salt.

As for what is current, you should do more research, as Powerfilm is a flexible PV material. It is applied in a laminated manner. It is also applied to standing seam roofing. Http://www.powerfilmsolar.com So no matter how much maligned polyester may be for clothing, it is a highly useful synthetic in electronics and for PV ssytems.

If you want to see projects you might be able to do in your home, check out the projects section of http://www.builditsolar.com Be prepared to spend several hours there.

If you want to try experiment with various items to try generate eelctricity, go for it. No harm in trying something, but just make sure to evaluate the phsyical properties of the materials to be sure they will hold up. Also know that when things break apart, they will become projectiles that can kill. So if you have neighbors within a mile of you, skip experimenting with PVC pipe- it breaks too easy and flies very far when it does- and it can kill. Do some serious research, and use some proven methods, such as what the recent books by Hugh Piggott describe. His wooden bladed props have a proven track record. And understand why they do. This will go far to keeping you from spending time with dead ends.

Sharon asks…

paper questions. is it good?

Count how many electronic devices you own. Now count how many of those you use on a daily bases. Now think about where all of the power to run those items comes from. As simple as it is, many Americans never think about where the power to run their personal gadgets, there only worry is about how big the bill is going to be at the end of the month. The truth is, Americans are the ones who need to think about energy consumption the most, because America uses far more energy per capita than any other nation in the world. This is because we have more money to burn, and we are completely energy dependent. If we want out world to continue to thrive, we as Americans are going to have to start using less energy as a whole and building more ways to reduce dependencies on oil and other unrenewable, dirty resources. The purpose of this paper is to inform the public about the salvations and pitfalls of different sources of renewable energy and the dangerous we will face if we don’t switch to it.
•Wind
Wind is great renewable resource; in this section of my paper I will outline the pros and cons of wind energy.
Wind is energy is completely clean, inexpensive to build, and produces a reasonable power output. However, wind energy can only work efficiently in areas where there is a more or less constant wind. Wind energy works the best in places like California where there is mountain ranges where valleys get constant wind blowing through them. Wind energy does work in Iowa though, mostly you will see wind farms on hills, but if you’ve ever seen an old farm it is most likely that they had wind energy! Wind energy is very old; it in the 18th century to pump water.

•Solar
Solar energy is one of my favorite sources of energy. It can be mounted on a roof to create clean power all through the day. Solar energy has several dehabilitating pitfalls though. Solar energy creates enough power to easily run a home, but it creates most of the energy when the occupants aren’t actually home. So a solar panel will run your appliances such as your fridge for free, but in the evening when you get home, turn on all the lights, and the sun is down, solar panels aren’t going to do you any good. So in order to combat this problem, solar panels would have to have batteries, this is completely possible, but unfortunately the batteries would have to be quite big, and very costly to replace once they stopped holding a charge. Solar energy would be great for the Midwest and other less populated areas but in order for solar energy to power places like New York City, you’re going to have to convince Montana to give up half their land for sole solar panel use for the “greater good”.
•Water Power and hydrogen power.

Water power is another very old renewable resource; it was use thousands of years ago to turn big wheels that were dipped in rivers to grind things up. Water power today is more tuned towards dams; dams make good energy, but they harm the environment more than any other renewable resource. Building dams causes the area in front of the dam to flood, resulting in loss of habitat for many an animal. Hydrogen power would be absolutely awesome if we had a source of pure hydrogen closer than the sun to harvest from. The only practical use for hydrogen energy is to use excess energy from solar panels to transform water into hydrogen; this may be a substitute for batteries for solar panels.

•Nuclear energy

In my mind this is the energy that has the potential to save humanity. Nuclear energy puts out tremendous amounts of power and has only a little waste. The main problem with nuclear energy is idiots who are terrified of being saved by it because it might “blow up”. Other problems include: the storage of the small amount of byproduct, eventually we will run out of Uranium (not a pressing problem), and nuclear plants take a long time to build even if they were to pushed through to build immediately, which never happens. German is currently 80% dependent on Nuclear energy and I think we need to follow their lead.
In conclusion, we as people have a responsibility to protect the world and to protect ourselves. In order to accomplish this we need to move forward and invest heavily in completely renewable resources, and stop popping out kids. As previously stated, I believe nuclear power will be our salvation, but we need to invest in all renewable resources; wind energy for California, solar for the Midwest, hydro for places with large rivers, and nuclear for the New Yorkers.

The Expert answers:

Generally speaking, when writing a formal essay or research paper, you want to avoid phrases like “I think,” and “In my opinion.” State your facts as facts and leave out anything that isn’t a fact. Unless you’ve been specifically instructed to share your personal opinion about your topic, then you shouldn’t express it in a paper.

Steven asks…

Why dont both parties support a carbon or foreign oil tax?

If you put a tax on carbon, or specifically, oil, it will:

1) help eliminate our dependence upon foreign oil
2) Allow us to minimize our military activities in the Middle east, which will cause islamic fundamentalists to terrorize someone else. Muslims wont hate the US if we ignore them like Africa.
3) Encourage growth of energy sources at home, improving the US economy.
4) Encourage growth of alternative, renewable and clean fuels
5) For those who care about AGW, it will decrease greenhouse gases.
6) Help decrease the deficit with increased tax revenue.

All in all, its a win/win. Repubs get to minimize terror and increase the economy, dems get alternative energy and help for global warming. Teabaggers get nothing, but they dont seem to want anything buy no taxes and all services anyway.
Yes, I understand that a carbon tax will raise prices… but isnt it worth it to save lots of soldiers lives as well as billions in payments to Saudi Arabia and Lockheed Martin?

The Expert answers:

Both parties would be called out for their hypocrisy.

Laura asks…

Wil renewable energy cause our economic system collpase?

I get this idea from the movie “Chain Reaction” starring Keanu Reeves, Morgan Freeman, Rachel Weisz.
Or it will only cause oil companies to collapse?

The Expert answers:

There are a few people making lots of money from non-renewable energies and they aren’t recirculating it. People will always find ways to make money. But with renewable energy, we’ll all have more money to spend since a lot of renewable energies are cheeper to the consumer – some are free (compressed air, sunshine).

Even if we had to choose….
Economy….. Or life on earth…….? Hmmmmm.

Ken asks…

How can a renewable energy source improve the life cycle of a digital system?

The Expert answers:

Life cycle of a digital system ,I believe,
has more to do with quality of power supply [filtering]
and not the source of power .

Not confirmed.

Sandra asks…

What do you think of energy independence?

Let’s set aside Global Warming for a minute and focus on economics.

Would it not be beneficial for America to move its energy sources away from oil and other fossil fuels? We continue to purchase billions of dollars worth of oil from countries like Saudi Arabia (which provided most of the 9/11 attackers) while not investing in renewable resources that can be harvested here in the US and create domestic employment opportunities.

Should we invest time and energy in converting our energy system to renewable resources? I think that this is an issue that both conservatives and liberals can agree upon.
I could have sworn i said let’s set global warming aside, Peaceone

The Expert answers:

I would love to see windmill fields throughout NW Texas.(proposed)
I would love to see wave/electricity generators off the east and west coast.(similar to the UK’s design)
I would love to see solar panels on the roof of every industrial building.(Germany already has a program)
I would love to see geothermal units attached to every home.(we already have this tech but is not widely used due to cost)

The problem is that Congress is payed by industries/countries that don’t want that to happen.

David asks…

Why doesn’t the government make it easier/cheaper to use renewable energy in the home?

such as more subsidies for wind and solar energy systems installed ateach home

The Expert answers:

B/c those subsidies will come out of my taxes, and I do not want them spent in this way.

But do not worry, in 50 years fossil fuels will get so expensive that renewable energy will be cheaper to use.

Mandy asks…

renewable energy through collected rainwater for cemetery?

are there systems or methods that can be used for maintenance of landscape and at the same time can provide energy for structures?

The Expert answers:

One of those systems is the Hoover Dam in Arizona/Nevada. This is much larger than a cemetery and probably very cumbersome. Also, you need a constant source of water for it to work effectively. Can you downsize the Hoover Dam? Maybe it’s worth a try?

Ruth asks…

How far behind Europe is U.S. in terms of Renewable Energy and High-Speed Rail?

Seems to me that the U.S. is years behind Europe and Asia (specifically China and Japan) when it comes to renewable energy deployment and high-speed rail. Too many lobbyists control the political system and they stand in the way of progress. So, how far behind are we?

The Expert answers:

The European Union gets 14.6% of it’s Energy from renewable sources compared to the US which gets 7.3%, so double.

But the 500 million people in the European Union only use 2,884,000,000,000 Kwh of electricity a year compared to the 3,873,000,000,000 Kwh the 310 million Americans use, energy saving is huge in Europe.

If you want to really see the real difference it’s in what measures are being taken now, Check out the Dersertec project for instance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1Q7jiFTQno The European Union is the main funder of the Iter project which is being built in france to create a fusion power plant putting up 50% of the funds while China, India, Korea, Russia, US and Japan put up the rest. Http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krqu9p1vsE0 These are just two examples of the direction Europe is moving, the European Union is planning to cut emissions by 25% by 2020 (compared to 1990 levels).

Here’s another example a major European car companies new ad watch it and see what you think http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwfML5k76Bs#movie_player the cars will probably be crap but at least it’s a start. Http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOceI7wisYc

As for trains America ain’t even in the same playing field. Http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdQ8CG2Up-g

Donald asks…

How and where to make a complaint against a renewable energy installer?

An independant inspection report highlighted several faults in the installation of a solar water heating system.

The Expert answers:

Your first redress is to contact the company that installed the unit/s, showing them a copy of the inspection report, they should then correct the defects listed in the report.
If they refuse then the next step is to call in the trading standards, explain the full situation to them and supply them with a copy of the inspection report and they will then be able to advise you as to the next cours of action, they might even take up the complaint for you if there have been other complaints about the company who did your instalation.

William asks…

What other software is similar to RETScreen?

I understand that RETScreen is a very popular software for design and feasibility of renewable energy systems. What alternative software is available? Is these anything web based?

The Expert answers:

Since it’s free: http://www.retscreen.net/ang/home.php what could possibly be better than that?

Susan asks…

Are there any lightning energy harvesting systems/designs at work yet this days?

Writing a report on renewable energy and I need to know if there are ANY systems/designs that are built and used atleast for experimental purposes? So fur what i have been found is researches that say its possible but they used computer programs to stimulate the lightning and the detailed electrical circuit to store the harvested energy.

The Expert answers:

I work in the renewable energy sector and there are no lightning harvesting systems in place or even seriously proposed. There can be a considerable amount of electric current in a lightning strike, but it does not last very long. According to the source below, the temperature of the return stroke can be as high as 50,000 degrees F, the voltage at 1,000,000 and the amperage at 200,000. Building equipment that can sustain those conditions repeatedly may not be impossible, however the amount of energy harvested would not be worth the investment for the amount of energy produced. And suppose you can build it in a lightning rich area like Florida (which has about half of all the lightning strikes in the US!) strikes are still relatively rare events for a large piece of stationary equipment.

Your Questions About Wind And Solar

Jenny asks…

how much does solar power cost in Australia?

need to find out for a school assignment

The Expert answers:

I bought some small power generation equipment from a wholesale site, if you think they meet your requirements, you can try, because they are really cheap

Donna asks…

How much does solar power and wind power cost per kWh?

The Expert answers:

The cost varies according to the circumstances but as a ball-park figure, you could assume that solar and wind power (energy actually) costs up to 5 to 25 times the cost of coal and nuclear energy. These two forms of energy are not suitable for making a worthwhile contribution to public electricity supplies BUT they cannot be beaten in remote locations.

Helen asks…

How much would it cost to power a neighborhood on solar or wind power?

I’m trying to find information on solar panels or wind turbines that would be able to power a whole neighborhood, along with how much it would cost.

The Expert answers:

I went down that road. Roughly you are looking at 12 times the cost of present municipal electrical sources. For example, to heat an all electric home would require $110,000 just for the solar panels, and they would have to cover 1/2 acre of space. Twice the size of a normal city lot. Wind is worse, because sometimes it doesn’t blow for a long time which means a massive battery bank would be required.

After researching this subject I come to have a new respect for our utility companies. Electricity is the best bargain I ever get for only 8 cents per KWH. We are spoiled.

Ruth asks…

how close are we to getting solar power cost-effectively?

The Expert answers:

We are already there. It costs less than the average swimming pool, which many middle class families find the money to install. My system will pay for itself in 6-7 years, then I’ll have another 18 years of free electriity, how much more affordable can it be.

Sharon asks…

How efficient/cost-effective would it be for solar power generation to be used on a massive scale?

Although solar/photovoltaic panels are still quite inefficient, why not use them on a massive scale, in places like Australia or the Sahara where there is bright sunlight nealry all the time? Surely solar farms on a collossal scale would: a) find a use for huge areas of otherwise useless desert, and b) generate enough electricity for the entire country, allowing it to do away with power stations? Or would the overall cost be too great – surely huge projects like these would help to lower the cost of photovoltaic panels?

The Expert answers:

Photo voltaic cells are an ecological disaster, costing (read using lots of resources to manufacture) a lot, and they have a limited life. They are uneconomic which is why solar farms use mirrors reflecting light to a central tower or to water pipes, where the high temperatures generated heat water to drive a turbine.
In a hostile environment like the sahara, photovoltaic cells or mirrors would be sand blasted into oblivion.

James asks…

How much would it cost, and how much land would be need to get all the electricity in the US from Solar Power?

Im just curious as to if this is even possible. How much total power is used on average by the US? How much would it cost to make this many solar panels or other systems to make electricity from the sun? Im trying to figure out an estimate of how much it would cost to get all the electricity used in the us from solar power.

The Expert answers:

15Watt 38in x 13in = 494sqIn Scale this up by a factor of 1 million

15Mega Watt = 494,000,000 sqin

494 000 000 square inch = 78.75 acre

Sofar 15Mega Watts from 1,000,000 panels needs 78.75 acres lets scale this up to equal SqMiles (640 acres = 1 sqMile) Note the area doesn’t consider additional room between the panels. You will need additional space so you can walk between them so as to be able to service them etc.

15 * (640/78.75)= 121.9 MegaWatts / SqMile
1000000 * (640/78.75) = 8126985 * $100each = $812,698,400

So far that is over $812 Billion and you have enough wattage to replace one nuclear power plant.

Your going to need more land than 1 sq mil, you will need additional hard ware to mount the panels.
So you can easily quadruple the cost and area requirements to $3.248 trillion(not counting the purchase of the land) on 4 square miles with 32,507,940 (32.5 million) solar panels

Why quadruple the cost? Remember that the panels are only exposed to 1/2 day worth of light so you need at least twice the capacity to store half of what you generate in batteries for night time use. And this is being generous in assuming that you get 100% efficiency and no cloudy days. The additional cost of batteries, wire , solar trackers etc are only partially covered in this estimate. Then you will have maintenance costs to keep the panels operating at peak performance and replace damage. (imagine what a hail storm would do)

And all of this to replace a single 120 mega watt power plant.

Ken asks…

How much will it cost to install a solar energy power to run a few appliances such as lights,tv,e-fans?

Also where I can inquire here in the Philippines (NCR) about the installation of Solar Power Energy?

The Expert answers:

I would not bother… You will not get your money back on the savings……….

Betty asks…

Solar power cost effective calculation?

An average householder uses 160 litres day-1 hot water at a temperature of 55oC, and the specific heat of water is 4.1868 kJ kg-1oC-1 and the inlet temperature of the water to the house is 10°C. Estimate the total energy requirement for hot water supply. If a 2 m2 solar collector is installed to save electricity for hot water supply, the efficiency of the solar panel is 55%. Assuming the mean availability of solar energy throughout the year is 115 Wm-2, the cost of electricity is 5.87p kWh-1, the total cost of the installation is £2000, and it has a life span of 20 years, is the scheme cost effective at a 0% discount rate?

I got the total energy required to heat the water as 11.47GJ/Annum and that its not cost effective as the solar panles will provide 34.7% of the heating requirement which is equilivent to £1300 over 20 years, thus as it cost £2000 to install, its not worth it.

Is this correct? I feel i have done it wrong

The Expert answers:

My calculations show the panels producing 7.25 GJ/year, and 11.00 GJ as the original electrical requirement. That means the panels would produce about 66% of the heating requirement (oddly, this is the complement of 34%).

1 kWh = 3.6 MJ, so the annual energies are

solar 2013 kWh/y
electric 3056 kWh/y

The value of the solar heating is therefore 11800p / year. I’m American, but if p are like cents, and pounds like dollars, then that’s £118 / year, or £2360 over 20 years, a bare win over the system price.

It sounds like these calculations are for a place that is right on the cusp of where solar makes sense. In Hawaii, electricity would be 3-4x that price, the system price 2/3 of that (simple panels – freezing not an issue), the insolation 2x that, and the water inlet temperature higher, making the energy requirement 2/3 of that.

Sandra asks…

How much would it cost to power my home using solar power?

What would be the approximate cost to power a 3500 squ. ft. home and a water well through solar power?

The Expert answers:

For a large property I recommend to use 4kW system which is maximum what you can install on domestic residence. That kind of system should be enough to run your water and electricity.
Before any assumptions. You have to know…that not every house get same return from the same system.
If your position [South facing], roof direction and angle are acceptable you should be just fine. It is also important what is temperature and how many sun days you can get per year to build a custom system for your specific needs.

It is crucial to set inverter with right panel right. Same panels might be less or more beneficial for properties in different areas in the country. Always ask fro advice before any purchases.
Make sure the company you are using is well accredited avoid high pressure sells-man.
